TMJ therapy

TMJ therapy

Dentists can treat Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders by providing custom nightguards or splints to prevent teeth grinding, prescribing muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory medication, and performing bite adjustments (occlusal therapy). They may also use Botox injections, recommend physical therapy, or use TENS machines to relax jaw muscles.

Common Dental Treatments for TMJ/TMD

Custom Night Guards/Splints

These appliances help protect teeth from grinding and help jaw muscles relax, reducing pressure on the joint.

Bite Adjustment (Orthodontic/Restorative)

If a misaligned bite causes the issue, dentists may recommend braces, crowns, or other orthodontic work to rebalance the bite.

Medications

Dentists may prescribe muscle relaxants, analgesics, or anti-inflammatory medication for pain management.

Botox Injections

In some cases, Botox is injected into the jaw muscles to reduce tension and alleviate pain.

Physical Therapy/Rehabilitation

Dentists may teach patients jaw exercises to stretch and relax muscles.

Referrals

They may refer patients to specialists, such as physiotherapists or chiropractors, for further treatment.
