Sedation dentistry
Sedation and comfort dentistry
Sedation and comfort dentistry uses medication, such as nitrous oxide, oral pills, or IV sedation, to help patients relax, reduce anxiety, and manage pain during dental procedures. It is designed for patients with dental phobia, low pain tolerance, or complex needs, ensuring a calm, comfortable, and often memory-free experience.
Types of Sedation
Techniques range from mild to deep, including inhaled nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"), oral sedation (pills), and intravenous (IV) sedation for deep relaxation. The primary goal is reducing anxiety and fear, managing pain, minimizing gag reflexes, and allowing patients to undergo multiple or lengthy procedures comfortably. It is commonly used for dental phobia, high gag reflex, complex or long treatments (e.g., wisdom teeth extraction), and for patients with special needs or physical disabilities.
Benefits
Patients often feel no pain or anxiety, have little to no memory of the procedure, and experience a safe, controlled, and relaxing, "stress-free" visit.
